Stone Veneer

Stone Veneer

Over twenty-five veneers on display, up on the wall where you can see them together and put your hands on them. River rock, ledgestone, limestone, stacked and cut — and we install it too.

Why On the Wall

You Cannot Choose Stone From a Photograph

Stone is the one material that photographs badly. Colour shifts under different light, the scale of a sample board lies about how it reads across a whole chimney breast, and two veneers that look identical online sit completely differently next to each other.

So we put them on the wall, full panels, side by side, under the same light. Bring a cushion, a floor sample or a photograph of the room and hold it up against them.

Our thin veneer comes through Frederick Block, Brick & Stone, in flats and matching corners so a chimney breast reads with real depth rather than a pasted-on face. Anything in their range we can get; what is on the wall in Front Royal is the short list we keep because it works.

River rock veneer
River RockRounded, tumbled and varied. Reads warm and informal. The traditional Valley look on a farmhouse or a cabin.
Ledgestone veneer
LedgestoneLong, thin, tightly stacked courses. The most contemporary of the natural looks and the most forgiving of a tall chimney breast.
Limestone veneer
LimestonePale, even and quiet. Lifts a dark room and sits well with a light mantel.
Grey stacked stone veneer
Stacked GreyCool, tight and modern. Pairs with black steel doors and a linear gas unit.

Where It Goes

Not Only the Fireplace

Stone veneer on a fireplace and corner

Fireplaces and chimney breasts

Inside

The obvious one, and the one that changes a room most. Veneer over a tired brick fireplace, a full floor-to-ceiling breast on a new build, or a stone face around a new insert to hide the surround panel.

We handle the whole thing — the substrate, the scratch coat, the setting, the corners and the pointing — and we do it with the appliance clearances in mind, which a general contractor often does not.

  • Full breast or a partial surround
  • Corner pieces so the returns do not read as fake
  • Hearth and mantel coordinated at the same time
Stone veneer on a chimney chase outside

Chases, columns and outside

Outside

A vinyl-sided chimney chase is the single thing that most obviously dates a house from the street. Veneer it and the whole elevation changes.

Porch columns, foundation skirts, outdoor kitchens and outdoor fireplaces too — see masonry and hardscaping. Outside work has to be detailed properly at the top and the bottom or water gets behind it, which is exactly the kind of thing a chimney company thinks about.

  • Chimney chases — the highest-impact exterior job we do
  • Weather detailing at the flashing, the cap and the grade
  • Outdoor fireplaces and kitchens

Fitting

What Makes It Look Real or Fake

CornersReal corner pieces, not two flats butted together. A mitred butt joint is the tell that gives away a cheap veneer job from across the street.
Blend from several boxesWorking out of one box at a time puts all the dark stone in one patch. We open several and blend as we go.
Joint styleDry stack, tight-jointed or a struck mortar joint completely changes the character of the same stone. We will show you all three on the wall.
Substrate and moistureWeather-resistive barrier, lath and a scratch coat done properly. Veneer stuck to bare sheathing fails, and it fails from behind where you cannot see it coming.
Termination detailsA clean stop at the mantel, the ceiling and the floor. Where the stone ends is where the eye goes.
Appliance clearancesStone over a fireplace still has to respect the appliance’s listed clearances to the mantel and the surround. We check the manual before we set the first piece.
