What Page County Actually Burns

We would rather show you the numbers than tell you we are “your local experts”. Here is what the Census says about the homes in Page County, and what it means for the chimney on your roof.

What that means for your chimney

60.2% of the homes here were built before 1980, and the median one went up in 1974. Clay flue tile from that era has had forty-plus winters of freeze and thaw on it. Cracked tiles and open mortar joints are the normal finding, not the unusual one.

About 1 in 11 homes in Page County burns wood as its main heat — roughly 927 households. That is a real heating load, not a decorative fire, and it is why we sweep on a schedule here rather than waiting for someone to notice a problem.

What we get called for here

  • Annual sweeping and inspection. The NFPA asks for a look every year. On a house that burns wood hard, that is not a formality.
  • 17.8% still heat with fuel oil. Oil-fired appliances are hard on a flue — the condensation is acidic and it eats clay tile and mortar from the inside. An oil flue that has never been lined is worth looking at.
  • Stainless relining. When the clay tile has gone, a liner gives the chimney a new gas-tight interior from the appliance to the top. Elite is our standard.
  • Inserts and stoves. An open masonry fireplace is a poor heater. An insert turns it into a real one — and we have over forty units burning in the showroom.
  • Caps, crowns and waterproofing. Water does more slow damage to a chimney around here than fire ever does.
